Superior Mirage represents a further investigation into the relationships between space, time, and memory; themes central to Matt’s work. This most recent series of paintings is bifurcated into two distinct aesthetic groups; one rigid and geometric and the other fluid. Within both formats, landforms and their environments are continuously broken down, delineated or distorted into various constituents. Landscapes appear reflected, refracted, and/or duplicated. The resulting imagery thus demands a reevaluation of the way we see what is before our eyes, destabilizing our perceptions of place and time in the process.
